Finding the Right Words for the Anti-Poverty Strategy Consultation
Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of working with clients at Parley Communications as they prepare responses to the Department for Communities’ Anti-Poverty Strategy consultation, which closes on 19th September.
For me, this work goes beyond drafting documents. Every consultation response is a chance to amplify the voices of organisations and communities who understand the reality of poverty in Northern Ireland. These groups are on the ground every day, running food banks, supporting families, advocating for children, and challenging systems that are failing too many people. Helping them translate that lived experience into clear, persuasive words is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do – create communication with purpose.
This isn’t new to me. I previously served as secretary of The Coalition of Christian Voices Against Poverty, and I know first-hand the dedication of local groups who work tirelessly to support people through difficult times. I’ve also had the privilege of working alongside organisations like Trussell Trust, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the Anti-Poverty Network, who do incredible work in advocating for change and calling out the systems that have allowed poverty to deepen across Northern Ireland.
That’s why consultation responses matter so much. They aren’t just pieces of paper; they have the potential to be opportunities to share lived experience and influence the policies that will shape lives for years to come. When written well, they can capture important evidence but also the human stories behind the figures.
Of course, I know it’s not always easy. Many organisations are stretched thin, balancing frontline work with policy engagement, and finding the right words under pressure can feel overwhelming. That’s where I believe Parley Communications can make a real difference. For our hard-working charity clients, we help manage those burdens, crafting responses that are evidence based and rooted in the lived realities our clients bring to the table.
With the 19th September deadline fast approaching, now is the time to speak up. And if you need support in shaping your response, I’d love to work with you. Together, we can make sure your voice is heard and the experiences of the people you support are reflected in this important ongoing conversation.
