How PR Can Help Charities Raise Money and Morale
At Parley, we work with charities and community organisations across Northern Ireland. One thing we hear time and time again is that it’s harder than ever to bring money in. Funding is being stretched. Demand is rising. And the people running the charities are often flat out, trying to keep vital services going.
We know how heavy that can feel.
The idea of launching a fundraising campaign for small charities with limited resources can feel daunting. But what we have learned is that fundraising doesn’t always have to be complicated or exhausting. Sometimes, the best ideas are the simplest, and we all know a bit of fun can go a long way towards boosting staff morale during challenging times.
A Challenge That Got People Moving
Take LCC Community Trust in Lisburn.
This June, they launched the Squat Squad Challenge – 30 squats a day for 30 days, to raise money for their work in the local community. It’s a way for people of all ages and abilities to get involved, either by joining in or donating. There’s no special equipment needed. No experience required. Just a willingness to move your body and raise a little money for a cause that matters.
We were delighted to help them shape the campaign. From coming up with the name and messaging, to writing press releases, creating social media content and giving general PR support, it’s been brilliant to watch it take off.
As Lynsey Agnew Caqeua, CEO of LCC Community Trust, puts it:
“It’s been such a simple but effective campaign. People are having a laugh, getting active, and telling their friends about it and it’s helped lift the mood around here. We haven’t had to spend much at all, and yet it’s brought in donations, built awareness, and reminded us of what community feels like when everyone gets behind something.”
What we’ve seen is that something as straightforward as a squat challenge can do more than raise money. It brings people together. It gets them talking. It reminds them why the charity exists in the first place.
Why PR Matters for Campaigns Like This
You don’t need a massive budget to run a good fundraising campaign, but you do need to get the word out. That’s where PR comes in. We help organisations:
Develop clear, strong messaging
Connect with local media
Use social media well
Keep the energy up across the campaign
Tell the story behind the fundraiser - the why
The Squat Squad Challenge has already sparked conversations and connections that will last well beyond June. That’s the kind of impact we love to see.
If You’re a Charity with a Story to Tell
We know that fundraising is about more than money, it’s about making connections, and keeping the lights on for people who rely on you. And if you’re a charity that feels like it’s lost a bit of momentum, we can help you find your feet again.
Whether it’s a one-off campaign or a longer-term comms strategy, we’ll work with you to come up with ideas that fit your values and feel doable even when you’re under pressure.
